Gujarat Civic Polls: BJP Sweeps Gandhinagar With 38 of 44 Seats, Retains Thara and Okha

The BJP on Tuesday swept the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation (GMC) polls, winning 38 of the 44 seats, and retained power in the Thara and Okha municipalities in Gujarat, according to results declared by the State Election Commission.

Gandhinagar verdict

The Congress finished second in Gandhinagar with five seats, while an independent candidate took one seat. The Aam Aadmi Party, which had won one seat in the previous GMC elections, failed to open its account this time. The corporation last went to polls in October 2021, when the BJP had won 41 of the 44 seats, the Congress two and the AAP one.

The Congress's best showing came in Ward 6, where it won all four seats. Elections were held across 11 wards with 130 candidates in the fray, and the civic body recorded a voter turnout of 59.25 per cent. The AAP contested 32 seats but won none, underlining its struggle to convert political outreach into electoral gains in the state.

Thara and Okha stay with BJP

In Thara municipality in Banaskantha district, the BJP won 19 of the 24 seats, with the Congress taking the remaining five. In Okha in Devbhumi Dwarka district, the BJP won 29 of the 32 seats for which polling was held, while the Congress secured three. Four seats in Okha had been declared uncontested after only BJP candidates remained in the fray, taking the party's total there to 33 of 36 seats.

Counting for all three civic bodies began at 9 am on Tuesday after voting on Sunday. Thara recorded the highest turnout at 81.18 per cent, followed by Okha at 63.27 per cent. The elections were conducted using electronic voting machines.
