Alphabet's Google Cloud on Thursday introduced the Gemini agent, described as a "single, universal agent for work," at its Gemini at Work 2026 event, Reuters reported.
The agent can answer questions, handle tasks, create content and write and run code — planning the work, using tools, connecting to a company's business systems, and returning finished work in documents, email and developer environments, according to Reuters.
It works directly inside Google Workspace apps including Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Calendar, as well as through Microsoft 365 and Slack, Reuters said. Times Now reported that it also works with Drive, Slides and Chat, and offers connectors for Git, Jira, Salesforce, ServiceNow and company databases.
The agent picks the best model for each task, Reuters reported, currently running on Google's Gemini models and Anthropic's Claude models, with more to be added later.
Companies can also create what Google calls "coworker agents" that act as team members with their own identity, email address, calendar and Google Drive, and even appear in the company directory, Reuters said. Versions for financial services and legal work are in preview, with government, healthcare and retail versions to follow.
The launch comes as the AI race intensifies, Reuters noted: it follows OpenAI's September launch of always-on agents called "dots" and Meta's "Muse" personal AI agent last month.
