New York: Georgia has tightened its grip on the No. 1 spot in the USA Today Sports NCAA Re-Rank 1-138, while Texas has fallen to No. 7 after a Week 6 shake-up.
The Bulldogs earned their ranking with a win at Alabama on Saturday — a result that leaves little room for debate at the top, with No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 3 Miami lacking the resumes to challenge Georgia.
Texas punished for Oklahoma loss
The Longhorns paid the price for an ugly rivalry loss to Oklahoma, tumbling to seventh. Texas avoided an even steeper fall thanks to its comeback win against Ohio State, but that head-to-head result was not enough to keep the Longhorns ahead of the No. 5 Buckeyes.
The SEC still dominates the upper tier, with four teams in the top eight: Georgia, No. 6 Alabama — which stayed put after losing to Georgia by a field goal — Texas, and No. 8 Mississippi.
Movers and fallers
UCLA is the week's big climber, jumping nine spots to No. 9 after beating Oregon 17-15, with new coach Bob Chesney's side holding a schedule that could carry it to ten wins in the regular season. Kentucky rose 20 places to No. 20 after beating LSU, while Oklahoma climbed to No. 29 on the back of its win over Texas.
Among the fallers, LSU dropped to No. 21, Florida to No. 33 and Texas A&M to No. 55. In the Big Ten, No. 14 Iowa and No. 15 USC moved up alongside UCLA, and Nebraska edged up to No. 25 after nearly beating No. 5 Indiana — while Oregon tumbled to No. 37, Minnesota slid 16 spots to No. 46 and Penn State fell to No. 57.
