A fire broke out at Mumbai's Film City in Goregaon on Monday afternoon, gutting a temporary structure behind Prime Focus Studio and sending thick black smoke into the air near the sets of Colors' reality show 'Pati Patni Aur Panga 2' and MTV's 'Hustle 5'. No injuries were reported.
The blaze erupted around 4 pm and was brought under control by 4.55 pm after the Mumbai Fire Brigade and other agencies were rushed to the spot, officials said. According to officials, the fire was confined to electric wiring, cables, doors, AC units, bamboo and plastic materials, sound equipment and shooting material at the temporary structure.
Crews safe, shooters evacuated
The 'Pati Patni Aur Panga 2' team confirmed to the Times of India that the fire occurred outside its sets and that no shooting was planned for the day. The 'Hustle 5' team said its grand finale was being filmed when the fire was spotted during a paparazzi session; everyone was alerted, evacuated in time and remained safe, the team told the Times of India.
Workers' body alleges negligence
The All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) claimed that the fire broke out on the 'Pati Patni Aur Panga 2' set at Prime Focus Studio and that a large number of workers and artistes were present. AICWA president Suresh Shyamlal Gupta alleged that adequate fire-safety measures were not in place, demanded a time-bound inquiry and an FIR for alleged negligence against the channel, producer and production house, and sought the resignation of Film City's managing director.
"This is not an accident, it is criminal negligence," Gupta said, and said he had written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asking for mandatory fire audits, on-set fire-safety staff and firefighting equipment for every Film City shoot. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained.
