At least ten people were killed this week in drone attacks on a university dormitory and a centre sheltering displaced families in El-Obeid, the capital of Sudan's North Kordofan state, according to a Sudanese rights group and a medical source.
Two strikes in two days
On Wednesday, a drone struck a dormitory at the University of Kordofan that was being used to house students and civilians, the Emergency Lawyers monitoring group said. Five people were killed and 47 wounded, with the group not attributing responsibility for the attack.
A day later, another drone hit a centre sheltering families displaced by fighting from across the Kordofan region. Five people were killed and 13 injured, a North Kordofan government official and a local-hospital medical source told AFP. The government official accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of carrying out the second strike; the RSF did not immediately respond.
Intensifying fighting in Kordofan
Fighting has intensified in North Kordofan, where Sudan's army and the paramilitary RSF have battled for more than three years. El-Obeid is a strategic crossroads city linking the capital region with the western provinces.
Drones have become a major source of casualties in the conflict. UN figures cited in the report say drones killed more than 1,100 people in the first five months of 2026, and the UN issued a "red alert" in July over conditions in El-Obeid and the wider Kordofan region.
Aid workers estimate the wider war has killed more than 200,000 people and displaced more than 13 million, creating the world's largest hunger and displacement crises. More than 300,000 people have been displaced from the region since the RSF captured El-Fasher in a major offensive last year.
