Walt Disney Animation Studios has released a new trailer and poster for "Hexed," its original coming-of-age fantasy film, and confirmed the full star-studded voice cast ahead of the film's November 25 theatrical release.
The trailer landed on October 13, giving audiences their fullest look yet at the film about Billie Doe, an impulsive teenager who discovers magical abilities and is transported from suburbia to Hexe, a realm of witches and creatures.
Star power across the board
Hailee Steinfeld leads the cast as Billie Doe, with Rashida Jones voicing her mother Alice and two-time Oscar winner Jodie Foster as the sinister Queen Celeste. Walton Goggins voices Beef Roger Crummchuk, a reclusive three-eyed magical cat.
Newly announced cast members include Henry Winkler as Nigel, a potoo bird, and Dan Stevens as Hieronymous, the Queen's grand councilor. The ensemble also features Tracey Ullman, Stephen Fry, Brett Gelman, Jimmy O. Yang, Ron Funches, Kathy Najimy, Alan Tudyk, Randall Park, Wayne Knight, Rachel Dratch, Yvette Nicole Brown, Samson Kayo, Cheri Oteri, Bill Farmer, Pat McAfee, Chris Parnell, Ariana Madix and Josh Dallas.
The trailer shows infant Billie being given a bracelet that limits her powers — which her teenage self removes — as she teams up with her cautious mother to uncover family secrets in Hexe.
Behind the camera
The film is directed by Fawn Veerasunthorn and Jason Hand, co-directed by Josie Trinidad, and produced by Roy Conli and Yvett Merino, with a screenplay by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller.
Early social reaction to the trailer has been broadly positive. Coverage of the release has noted Laika's "Wildwood" as a similarly-themed fall competitor, setting up an interesting box-office contest between two original animated fantasies.
