Night City is heading to the big screen. Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film based on CD Projekt Red's blockbuster video game Cyberpunk 2077, according to a report by Deadline published on October 8.
Di Bonaventura to produce with CD Projekt Red
Longtime Transformers and G.I. Joe producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to produce the project alongside the game's developer, CD Projekt Red.
"We're excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares our creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise," CD Projekt joint-CEO Michał Nowakowski said in a statement. "We look forward to sharing more details at the appropriate time."
The film will be set in the Cyberpunk universe rather than directly remaking the game's story, leaving room for a new narrative inside the world fans know. No director, writer or cast members have been announced, and Paramount has not set a release date — the project is in early development.
From rocky launch to entertainment franchise
Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 as an open-world role-playing game following the mercenary V through the dystopian Night City, with Keanu Reeves playing rockstar-turned-terrorist Johnny Silverhand. After a troubled debut, the game was rebuilt through updates and the 2023 Phantom Liberty expansion, and is now widely regarded as a sci-fi landmark.
The franchise has already proved it can travel beyond games: Netflix's 2022 anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners became a global hit, and a second season is on the way. An earlier live-action project involving Anonymous Content had been in development before the Paramount deal.
The film continues Paramount's push into video-game adaptations, with Street Fighter arriving soon and a Call of Duty movie already dated for 2028.
