Palo Alto-based software startup Vinci has raised $250 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, the company said on Tuesday, betting that high-fidelity physics simulation will become essential to designing the next generation of AI hardware.

The 70-person startup builds simulation software used in chip and hardware design, starting with thermal simulation and expanding toward full-system simulation, vibration testing and electromagnetics. The funding round was led by Advent, Temasek and Xora Innovation, with Eclipse, Khosla Ventures and Madrona also participating.

Heat is the enemy

The pitch is rooted in a physical problem: AI chips generate enormous amounts of heat and are growing ever more complex, making accurate simulation increasingly valuable to hardware designers. Vinci says its foundation AI model for simulation has already been proven in the field, and it plans to grow from two pilot deployments to twenty.

Taking on the incumbents

Vinci competes in a market that includes AI-based simulation products from established chip-design software firms Cadence and Synopsys. The startup plans to use the new capital for computing costs, hiring and expanding its simulation product range, chief executive Hardik Kabaria said.
