China's industrial profit growth slowed further in August as strength in technology manufacturing amid the AI boom was outweighed by persistently weak domestic demand, according to National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) data released on Monday.
The numbers
Profits at China's industrial firms rose 4.2% in August from a year earlier, down sharply from an 11.2% increase in July. Growth for the first eight months of 2026 moderated to 15.7%, from 17.6% in the January–July period.
A two-speed economy
Tech manufacturing remained the engine: profits in computer, communication and other electronic equipment manufacturing jumped 110% in the first eight months, contributing close to two-thirds of overall industrial profit growth. By contrast, sectors exposed to weak domestic consumption struggled — profits in wine, beverages and refined tea manufacturing fell 34.7%.
Firms are increasingly struggling to maintain pricing power amid soft consumption and excess capacity in some sectors, and manufacturers are leaning on overseas markets for better profits — a shift that risks deepening China's reliance on exports at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions and scrutiny of its trade surplus. The divergence between booming AI-adjacent industries and struggling consumer-facing sectors underscores the imbalances that economists say could weigh on growth well into next year.
What economists say
"Going forward, boosting household income and consumption and expanding domestic demand will be crucial to sustaining steady growth in industrial enterprise profits," said Ding Meng, chief economist of China Citic Bank International. Earlier this month, a central bank adviser warned that AI could worsen and extend the imbalance between robust supply and subdued demand.
