The Japanese animated film "Chiikawa The Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island" has claimed the top spot at the South Korean weekend box office, overtaking local hit "The Assassin(s)" by a margin of just 215 viewers.

According to the Korean Film Council's integrated ticketing network, the film drew 407,895 moviegoers across South Korea from October 9 to October 11, taking its cumulative audience to 1,281,485. "The Assassin(s)" attracted 405,966 viewers over the same weekend, finishing second in its fourth week of release.

A weekend reversal

The result reverses the order of the opening weekend. Released on September 30, "Chiikawa The Movie: Secret of the Mermaid Island" had finished second in its debut frame, trailing "The Assassin(s)" by roughly 7,000 viewers. In its second week it managed to claw past its rival in one of the tightest box office finishes of the year.

The film is based on the popular "Siren Arc" feature-length episode from the manga "Chiikawa" by Japanese illustrator Nagano. It follows Chiikawa and friends as they accept a suspicious subjugation mission on an uncharted island — lured by the promise of 100 times the regular pay — and uncover hidden secrets there.
