BSF Shoots Dead Two Suspected Pakistani Intruders in Punjab's Tarn Taran; Bodies to Be Handed Over After Legal Formalities

The Border Security Force shot dead two suspected Pakistani intruders along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab's Tarn Taran district on Friday (October 2, 2026), after troops challenged three men who kept moving toward Indian territory in daylight, officials said. Pakistan Rangers has sought the return of the bodies, which will be handed over once legal formalities are complete.

Daylight bid foiled near the border fence
The incident was reported around 11.30 am near the Tarn Taran border. A senior BSF official told The Hindu that three men were seen proceeding toward the border in daylight, trying to take cover behind the standing paddy crop to enter India.

BSF personnel challenged them and warned them to stop, but the men continued moving forward. Two of them were shot dead in the ensuing firing, while the third person turned back, the official said. The bodies were found lying about 50 metres beyond the border fence.

Identities still to be established
The two men appeared to be in their twenties and were wearing Pathan suits; one of them had an expensive watch, the official said. Their identities were yet to be established, and it was not clear whether they were carrying weapons. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and the local police were informed.

The official said the Pakistan Rangers had asked for a flag meeting, which was held around 7 pm on Friday. At the meeting, the Rangers sought the return of the two bodies. Following the talks, it was decided to hand the bodies over after the legal formalities are completed, and proceedings were under way late on Friday.

Border context
The incident underlines the continued pressure on Punjab's 553-km-long international border with Pakistan, which has seen repeated infiltration and cross-border smuggling attempts in recent years.

Separately on Friday, Punjab Police dismantled two illegal arms and narcotics supply networks and arrested four people in Amritsar, recovering 10 kg of heroin and 10 pistols. Police said the accused were allegedly linked to foreign-based smugglers, and two FIRs were registered. Further investigation is under way to establish the full network.
