Veteran actor and filmmaker Nana Patekar died on Thursday morning after suffering a cardiac arrest at his residence in Goa. He was 75.

Patekar was found unconscious at his apartment in Dona Paula, near Panaji, and was rushed to Manipal Hospital, where doctors tried to revive him for nearly 45 minutes of continuous CPR before declaring him dead early on Thursday morning. NDTV reported the time of death as 5:20 am, while The Week quoted the hospital's doctor as saying he was declared dead at around 5:10 am. His son Malhar, who was in Pune, has left for Goa.

Hospital statement and tributes

Dr Shekhar Salkar, Chief of Oncology at Manipal Hospital, told news agency ANI that despite the prolonged resuscitation attempt, Patekar could not be revived. A medico-legal case has been registered and a post-mortem will be conducted, he said.

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant mourned the actor on Thursday, calling him a good friend and recalling Patekar's social work in the state through the Nana Patekar Foundation. Tributes from Riteish Deshmukh and Akshay Kumar, who worked with him on Housefull 5, also poured in.

A towering career

Born Vishwanath Patekar on January 1, 1951 in Maharashtra, he made his Hindi film debut with Gaman in 1978 and went on to become one of Indian cinema's most intense and distinctive performers. His breakthrough came with Salaam Bombay! and Parinda, the latter earning him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of the underworld don Anna Seth.

Over a career spanning nearly five decades, he won three National Film Awards and received the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contribution to cinema and the arts. His celebrated performances included Krantiveer, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan, Natsamrat — which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor in 2016 — and the beloved comic role of Uday Shetty in Welcome.

Patekar was last seen publicly four days ago in Goa, addressing the Samraat Club International installation ceremony in Dona Paula.
