President Donald Trump has launched a furious attack on Norway after being passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize, claiming at a rally that he deserves not one but eight of the medals.
"Today they gave out the Nobel Peace Prize to a person — I never heard of the person. Nobody did. It's a mystery person," Trump said at a rally in Syracuse, New York. He dismissed the winner, South African jurist Navi Pillay, as a "liberal person who works at the United Nations," before adding, "I never heard of this particular person, but congratulations anyway."
Attack on the Nobel committee
Trump tore into the five-person Norwegian Nobel Committee that honoured Pillay, arguing: "The United States of America, represented by me as your president, should have received the Nobel Peace Prize, but didn't."
He called the snub "an indelible stain on the country of Norway" and "such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision," declaring that the prize had been "forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and, really, enemies of civilization." He added: "And we will not forget, Norway."
The eight-wars claim
Trump credited himself with stopping "eight wars" and argued, "We should have had eight Nobel Prizes for each war." He said not being awarded the prize was "just another sign of how Norway and all these others are ripping off our country."
Pillay, a former UN human rights chief and judge at the International Court of Justice, won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize on Friday. It is the second straight year Trump has been passed over for the honour.
