Breaking: Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Strikes Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula; No Tsunami Threat, Say Agencies

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula on Friday morning, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) and India's National Centre for Seismology (NCS). Monitoring agencies said there was no tsunami threat.

The tremor was recorded at around 9:05 am IST (3:35 pm local time), with its epicentre about 123 km southwest of the town of Vilyuchinsk in Russia's Far East. The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recorded the quake at magnitude 7.0 at a depth of about 148 km, roughly 415 miles southwest of Bering Island in the Komandorski Islands region.

No tsunami threat

NOAA said there was no tsunami warning, advisory, watch or threat following the earthquake. The US National Tsunami Warning Center separately assessed that there was no danger.

There were no immediate details of damage or casualties. The EMSC said its preliminary magnitude reading had been confirmed by seismic data; its detailed figures separately recorded the event at magnitude 6.9 with a depth of 130 km, while the NCS put the depth at 152 km — the agencies' figures differ slightly, as is typical for early readings.

A seismically active region

The EMSC placed the quake about 146 km south-southwest of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a city of around 187,000 people, and 80 km north-northeast of Ozernovskiy. Kamchatka sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world's most seismically active belts, and last July an 8.8-magnitude mega-quake off the region's coast triggered a tsunami that swept part of a coastal village into the sea.

In a separate mishap, BNO News reported that Japan's Meteorological Agency wrongly issued an early warning estimating a magnitude 9.9 quake and forecasting strong shaking across much of Japan; the agency's actual reading was 6.9. The warning was corrected.

This is a developing story; further details on the quake's impact are awaited.
