Breaking: INDIA Bloc MPs to March From Parliament to ECI Today Over 'Vote Theft', Demand CEC's Removal

Around 150 MPs and senior leaders of the INDIA opposition alliance will march from Parliament House to the Election Commission in New Delhi on Tuesday, October 6, in a show of strength over the contentious Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and the demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh said on Monday that MPs of all opposition parties would take part in the march, which will begin from Parliament House after leaders assemble at Makar Dwar at 10.30 AM. The march itself is expected to start at 11 AM and, according to Ramesh, will be carried out peacefully.

The protest is part of the INDIA bloc's wider campaign alleging vote theft and irregularities in the voter-list revision exercise. Prominent leaders expected to join include Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, and Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Ramesh said the decision was taken at a two-hour meeting of all Pradesh Congress Committee presidents and in-charges, attended by Kharge and Gandhi. He added that until October 8, INDIA alliance parties will organise pad-yatras at the district level, along with demonstrations and meetings, to gather information about voters whose names are allegedly missing from the rolls.

Background of the SIR row

The SIR exercise has triggered a sharp political confrontation. On Monday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath defended the revision, saying the identification and removal of ineligible names illegally included in the voter list was essential for India's security, unity and integrity, and appealed to those who turned 18 to get enrolled.

The Chief Election Commissioner has faced petitions in the Supreme Court over the SIR decisions, and Chief Justice of India Surya Kant on Monday clarified that the Supreme Court had not approved any modifications to Form 6, the form voters fill during the revision process.
