Panama: A fresh earthquake struck Panama on Monday, days after a powerful magnitude 7.7 tremor shook the country, as authorities reported more than 300 aftershocks and a national state of emergency remained in force.
The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre measured Monday's quake at magnitude 6 at a depth of 35 km. The US Geological Survey measured the same quake at magnitude 6.1 with a depth of 10 km, about 18 km west of Rio Grande, according to Times Now.
Follows Friday's 7.7 and 6.6 quakes
The new tremor follows Friday's magnitude 7.7 and 6.6 earthquakes, which collapsed buildings near the epicentre and triggered evacuations. Panama has recorded more than 300 aftershocks since Friday, according to Emergency Operations Centre director Rene Garcia.
No deaths reported; 27 injured, nearly 900 homes damaged
No deaths have been reported, but at least 27 people have been injured and nearly 900 homes damaged, emergency authorities said, warning the toll could rise in remote areas. The government declared a national state of emergency on Saturday to coordinate relief. The worst-affected provinces are Los Santos, Cocle, Veraguas and Herrera, and schools were closed on Monday for building inspections.
