Tension flared in Kerala's capital late Wednesday night after a beer bottle was allegedly hurled at the state headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party, an incident the BJP has blamed on Congress workers.
Night-time attack
According to the First Information Report, the bottle was allegedly thrown at the KG Marar Bhavan, the BJP's Kerala headquarters in Thampanoor, Thiruvananthapuram, at around 11.30 pm on Wednesday. Two people on a scooter are accused of hurling the bottle at the office and pushing police personnel who tried to stop them, the FIR states.
A case has been registered against unidentified persons. Police are examining CCTV footage from the area to identify those responsible.
Political blame game
The BJP has alleged that Congress workers were behind the attack. BJP national secretary K Surendran claimed that former BJP state president PK Krishnadas had also been targeted earlier in the evening, at around 6 pm, and said the party would protest. "For the last three to four days, Congress workers have been deliberately targeting him," Surendran said, also alleging that Youth Congress workers had recently targeted Home Minister Amit Shah during his Kerala visit.
The Congress has not been quoted responding to the allegation in the reports so far, and the identities of the attackers remain unconfirmed.
Security stepped up
The incident comes amid escalating political confrontations in the capital, which have included clashes between BJP, Youth Congress and SFI workers. Security has been tightened in Thiruvananthapuram amid the possibility of further protests.
The attack has sharpened the already tense political atmosphere in Kerala, where rival parties have traded accusations over a series of recent street-level confrontations.
