Breaking: Anne Carson Wins 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature for "Bold and Inventive Oeuvre"

Canadian poet, essayist and classicist Anne Carson has won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, the Swedish Academy announced on Thursday in Stockholm.

The Academy honoured the 76-year-old "for her bold and inventive oeuvre that, in playful dialogue with the classical tradition, has created new forms for contemporary literature." The prize carries a cash award of 12 million Swedish kronor, roughly $1.2 million, and will be presented in Stockholm on December 10.

A career blending ancient and modern

Carson's work defies easy categorisation, moving freely between poetry, prose, essay, translation and drama. Trained as a classical scholar at the University of Toronto and the University of St Andrews, and a teacher at McGill, the University of Michigan and Princeton, she brings ancient Greek myth and philosophy into direct conversation with contemporary life.

Her breakthrough came in 1998 with Autobiography of Red, a verse novel that reimagines the Greek monster Geryon as a tender, vulnerable young figure in love with Heracles. The Nobel committee noted how the book frames its long narrative verse with an erudite discussion of Stesichorus, the Greek poet who first told the Geryon myth.

Other landmark works include The Beauty of the Husband: A Fictional Essay in 29 Tangos, for which she became the first woman to win the prestigious T.S. Eliot Prize in 2001; Nox, a 2010 box-set memorial to her late brother built from photographs, letters and an accordion-folded scroll; and the 2019 performance piece Norma Jeane Baker of Troy, which intertwines Helen of Troy with Marilyn Monroe. CNN reports she is the 19th woman among 122 winners of the literature prize.

"Listening to the wind"

Carson learned of the award in an unusual way. Ingrid Carlberg, the permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy, said she reached the writer by telephone in Iceland, where Carson had been "listening to the wind."

"She was taken by surprise but very happy – I could hear that in her voice," Carlberg said.

Anders Olsson, chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature, said almost all of Carson's literary production "has centred upon the intersection between the philologist's obsession with words and the poet's desire for new meaning," and credited her with new forms for contemporary literature that reflect "the freedom with which she relates to literary expectations and rule systems."

Fourth prize of the week

Literature is the fourth Nobel of the week, following prizes for medicine, physics and chemistry. Carson succeeds Hungarian novelist László Krasznahorkai, the 2025 laureate, and joins past recipients including Ernest Hemingway, Gabriel García Márquez and Canadian Alice Munro.

The Nobel Peace Prize is set to be announced on Friday, with the economics prize following on October 12.
