The makers of Ramayana have unveiled a new solo poster featuring Arun Govil as King Dashrath, offering audiences a first look at the actor in his role in Nitesh Tiwari's upcoming two-part epic.

The casting carries a resonance few announcements in Indian cinema can match. Govil remains indelibly associated with his portrayal of Lord Ram in the classic television adaptation of the Ramayan — a role that defined his career and made him a household name across generations. Now, he steps into the royal shoes of Dashrath, the King of Ayodhya and father of Rama himself.

Sharing the poster on social media, the makers wrote: "He once brought Ram to life for a generation. Now, he returns to the world of Ramayana as the King of Ayodhya. Arun Govil as King Dashrath." The poster shows Govil in an elaborate royal avatar, reflecting the stature of Dashrath as the ruler of Ayodhya and one of the central figures in Rama's family story.

A star-studded ensemble

Govil's casting adds another familiar face to what is already one of the most ambitious ensembles mounted in Indian cinema. The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman and Ravi Dubey as Lakshman.

The epic is produced by Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with DNEG and Yash's Monster Mind Creations, with the scale to match: a two-part release planned across India in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with an IMAX presentation.

Release plans

Ramayana: Part 1 is scheduled to release worldwide on November 5, 2026, while Part 2 is slated for Diwali 2027. Sony Pictures will handle the film's global distribution outside India, while Dharma Productions will distribute it in the Hindi-speaking market.

For audiences who grew up watching Govil's Ram on television, seeing him return to the epic — this time as the father rather than the son — is the kind of full-circle moment that has already set social media abuzz.
