Arizona State bounced back from last week's heavy home defeat to beat Hawaii 30-12 in a rain-hit Week 6 college football clash at Mountain America Stadium in Tempe on Saturday, with freshman running back Cardae Mack producing a breakout performance.
The Sun Devils' final non-Big 12 game of the regular season was interrupted by a 32-minute lightning delay that extended half-time, as heavy rain swept across the stadium. Arizona State led 17-6 at the break and pulled away in the second half.
Mack and Harris lead the way
Mack, a freshman, rushed for 154 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns, including a 67-yard burst that capped a 96-yard drive late in the third quarter. He had earlier opened his college touchdown account with a one-yard run in the second quarter.
Receiver Reed Harris caught eight passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Cutter Boley completed 21 of 31 passes for 189 yards. Arizona State improved to 3-2 with the win.
Hawaii, which fell to 1-5, managed only 64 rushing yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Micah Alejado threw for one touchdown and one interception on 25-of-49 passing, with Audric Harris catching a 32-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.
Bounce-back win
The victory came a week after Arizona State were beaten 55-19 at home by Baylor in Week 5, and head coach Kenny Dillingham's side will take encouragement from a defensive display that repeatedly held firm, including a goal-line stand in the second quarter and a late stop on fourth down.
Arizona State next travel to Texas Tech in Lubbock on October 17, while Hawaii host New Mexico on the same day.
