Apple is preparing to launch Apple Intelligence in mainland China in December as part of an iOS 27.3 software update, according to a Bloomberg report - a move that would end a wait of more than two years for the company's AI features in one of its most important markets.

The rollout, covered by MacRumors, 9to5Mac and The Apple Post, would arrive with a deliberately limited feature set. The initial launch is expected to include Writing Tools, notification summaries, Genmoji and the Clean Up feature in Photos - the capabilities Apple first introduced in 2024. The rebuilt Siri AI assistant introduced with iOS 27 would not be included, and Apple executives are reportedly not optimistic about bringing it to China anytime soon.

A limited version for a tightly regulated market

China's restrictions on foreign-developed generative AI services forced Apple to take a different technical path. Bloomberg reports that Apple worked with Alibaba on safeguards for the AI system, including a filtering mechanism designed around local requirements, while Baidu is involved in areas including search and Siri.

Separately, the South China Morning Post reported that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has updated network access permits to list Apple Intelligence alongside Alibaba's Qwen and Tongyi Wanxiang models for devices including the iPhone Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and several earlier iPhones - removing a major obstacle to a public launch.

Long-delayed arrival

Apple has been trying to bring Apple Intelligence to China since the platform's debut in 2024. Earlier launch targets reportedly slipped repeatedly as the company worked through regulatory approval and local model requirements. Apple received preliminary clearance in July, but needed additional approvals before a consumer launch, and secured key permits on September 29.

The delay has mattered: Chinese rivals including Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo already offer extensive generative AI features on their devices, leaving Apple without one of the headline capabilities it promotes elsewhere.

Apple has not publicly confirmed a December launch, so the reported iOS 27.3 timeline could still shift.
