Anthropic has switched on in-country inference for its Claude AI models in India, meaning requests sent through Amazon Bedrock are now processed on servers located within the country. The company announced the move on Monday, describing India as one of its largest markets globally.
Claude Opus 5, Sonnet 5 and Haiku 4.5 are the models available for local processing through Amazon Web Services' Bedrock platform. Anthropic says organisations get more control over where their data and AI workloads are handled, a factor that matters deeply in regulated sectors such as banking, payments, insurance and government.
Data residency as the unlock
"In August, we committed to bringing Claude inference to India, and we are delivering on that promise," said Irina Ghose, Anthropic's managing director for India. "Our customers, especially in regulated sectors and government, want to use Claude on their most critical work, with requests processed in the country. From today, they can."
Anthropic said deployments through Bedrock in India include audit trails and access controls for risk and compliance teams, and that keeping workloads domestic could help companies move AI applications from pilots to wider production use.
Indian industry lines up
Reliance and CRED tested the capability during a private preview, according to Anthropic. TCS, Kotak Bank, the Mahindra Group and Godrej Industries welcomed the launch, citing regulatory needs, performance, resilience and lower latency.
Claude is already in use across large Indian firms: TCS is rolling it out to 50,000 employees, Infosys has set up an Anthropic Centre of Excellence, and Kotak Bank, Axis Bank, IndusInd Bank and NPCI are using it for engineering and employee productivity. Anthropic opened its Bengaluru office in February and certified up to 5,000 people through its first partner certification programme there in August.
The launch is the latest step in Anthropic's India push as global AI companies compete for the enterprise market, where data governance is becoming a deciding factor.
