Mary Louise Weller, best known to film fans as Mandy Pepperidge in the 1978 comedy classic Animal House, has died at 79 after a long illness. Her death, which occurred on Thursday, was reported by Variety and confirmed by her longtime partner Michael Roy Curtis.

Weller played the strait-laced sorority girl Mandy Pepperidge opposite John Belushi's Bluto in John Landis's raucous campus comedy, a film that went on to become one of the most influential comedies of its era and a touchstone for generations of moviegoers.

A varied career
Born in New York City on October 2, 1946, Weller counted actor and singer Danny Kaye as her godfather and trained with the U.S. Equestrian Team as a teenager. She made her film debut in the 1972 political comedy Hail!, and went on to appear in The Bell Jar, Forced Vengeance, Q and Blood Tide. Her television credits included Baretta, Kojak, ChiPs and Starsky & Hutch, with a final on-screen appearance in 1983's Quincy, M.E.

Beyond acting, Weller wrote the play Four Alone, which was staged at the Greenhouse Theater in Pasadena. She is survived by her cousin Sheila Weller.
