Amazon is in talks with investors about moving roughly $8 billion worth of advanced Nvidia AI chips into a special-purpose vehicle and then leasing them back, the Financial Times reported, in a creative financing move aimed at easing the pressure of soaring AI infrastructure costs on its balance sheet.

How the proposed deal works

Under the plan reported by the FT and carried by Reuters on Friday, Amazon would transfer thousands of Nvidia Grace Blackwell chips it is installing in US data centres into the vehicle, then lease the chips back for its own use. Amazon has held talks with investors in recent weeks to gauge interest; the vehicle would tap outside investors through debt issuance, and Amazon plans to offer an equity stake of up to 10%.

The chips are being installed in more than a dozen US data centres across five states, including Nevada and Virginia.

No comment from either company

Amazon and Nvidia did not immediately respond to Reuters for comment. The deal as reported is a proposal under discussion, not a completed transaction — key details could still change.
