Adani Green Energy has expanded its operational battery energy storage capacity at Khavda in Gujarat to 6.63 gigawatt-hours, up from 3.55 GWh in June — a scale-up that gives the company more than half of India's total operational storage capacity.

The announcement, made Thursday, puts AGEL's share above 50 percent of the country's roughly 12.6 GWh of operational battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity, based on Central Electricity Authority data as of August 31 and subsequent industry disclosures. The company reached the milestone within 14 months of beginning on-site construction at Khavda, with the latest 3.08 GWh addition commissioned within 10 months of construction starting.

The storage is integrated with AGEL's renewable energy development at Khavda, where it is building a 30 GW project across 538 square kilometres of barren land. The company says the 6.63 GWh installation is now the world's largest operational battery energy storage system at a single location.

To illustrate the scale, AGEL said the system can store enough clean electricity to power around two million homes for a day, support the peak electricity demand of cities such as Nagpur, Patna or Visakhapatnam for several hours, and is equivalent to the batteries in more than 150,000 mid-sized electric vehicles. The Financial Express reported the company has now achieved almost 70 percent of its FY27 target of adding over 10 GWh of battery storage, and is eyeing 50 GWh within five years.

"Reaching 6.63 GWh of operational battery storage in just 14 months is a significant milestone for AGEL and India's clean energy transition," said Sagar Adani, executive director of Adani Green Energy. "At this scale, storage can make renewable power firmer, more reliable and dispatchable when the grid needs it."
