Adani Airports will begin the phased redevelopment of the North Section of Mumbai Airport's Terminal 1B from January 2027, citing safety concerns over the ageing 60-year-old structure, the airport operator announced on Saturday.

What changes for passengers

Mumbai International Airport Limited, operated by Adani Airports, said only the North Section of Terminal 1B, which accounts for around one-third of Terminal 1's capacity, will be demolished in the first phase to minimise disruption.

The redevelopment will temporarily deoperationalise around 5 million passengers a year, or about 9 per cent of Mumbai Airport's total annual traffic of nearly 55 million passengers. Airlines will have the option to temporarily shift operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport, with Adani Airport Holdings providing assistance for the transition. The company stressed that the shift is temporary and does not represent a permanent move of Mumbai Airport traffic.

"91% of Mumbai Airport's passenger traffic will remain unaffected even as we undertake redevelopment of the age-old infrastructure that was in urgent need of repairs," said Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airport Holdings.

Why now

Terminal 1 has been identified as a safety concern for several years, with only temporary mitigation measures in place in the absence of an alternative facility for passengers and airlines. The company said the risks associated with continued operations increased after a fire incident at Terminal 1 in April this year. "Passenger safety must remain paramount," Bansal said, adding that further delays could affect the safety and convenience of travellers.

The company also noted that extensive consultations with airlines on the future of Terminal 1 have been ongoing since 2020, and that the redevelopment proposal was presented before the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority and incorporated into the approved tariff framework.

Capacity boost

The redevelopment is expected to raise Terminal 1's capacity by 33 per cent, from the current 15 million passengers per annum to 20 million. Once complete, the terminal will restore all historical slots and provide additional slots for airlines, the company said.
