NEW CHANDIGARH: Rohit Sharma scripted another landmark on Sunday, becoming the fastest opener in cricket history to reach 10,000 ODI runs. The India captain got to the mark in 202 innings during the third ODI against the West Indies at New Chandigarh, needing just two runs before the match to reach the milestone.
In doing so, Rohit broke the record previously held by Sachin Tendulkar. He is only the second Indian and the fourth batter overall to reach 10,000 ODI runs as an opener, joining Tendulkar, Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya and the West Indies' Chris Gayle in the elite club.
A defining opening legacy
The milestone caps a remarkable run as one of the defining white-ball openers of his generation. Rohit's career at the top of the order has included three ODI double hundreds — the only batter to achieve that feat — and a tournament-record five centuries at the 2019 World Cup.
The landmark arrived in a memorable contest at New Chandigarh. Shai Hope's unbeaten 162 powered West Indies to a record chase in the same match, denying India a 3-0 series sweep after the hosts had already sealed the series 2-0 earlier in the week.
Rohit, who recently reaffirmed his ambition to play the 2027 World Cup, continues to add to an ODI legacy that now stands alongside the game's greatest opening records.
