India chased down a mammoth 406-run target to beat West Indies by eight wickets in the second ODI at Guwahati's Barsapara Cricket Stadium on Wednesday, completing the highest successful run chase in their ODI history and sealing the three-match series 2-0.
Captain Shubman Gill led the assault with a sensational unbeaten 223 off 133 balls, studded with 26 fours and eight sixes. Rohit Sharma smashed 101 off 75 balls — an innings that also carried him past 12,000 ODI runs — before falling leg-before to Jayden Seales. Virat Kohli chipped in with 29, and Ruturaj Gaikwad (31 not out) joined Gill to finish the job in 43.3 overs, with 39 balls to spare.
West Indies had earlier posted 405 for 7 — their highest-ever ODI total — on the back of three centuries: John Campbell (101 off 68), captain Shai Hope (104 off 94) and Amir Jangoo (114 off 77). It was the first time three West Indies batters scored hundreds in the same ODI innings. The match produced five centuries in total, a record for a single ODI, beating the previous mark of four.
Records tumble in Guwahati
The 406 chase betters India's previous best of 360 against Australia in Jaipur in 2013, and stands as the second-highest successful chase in ODI history after South Africa's 438 for 9 against Australia in Johannesburg in 2006. For West Indies, the total surpassed their previous best of 389 against England in 2019 — but it still was not enough on a night when India's openers produced one of the great chases in the format's history.
