Florida's brief stay in the AP Top 10 lasted just one week. The Gators were routed 45-17 by Missouri in Week 5 of the college football season on Saturday, dropping eight places to No. 16 while the Tigers soared 11 spots to No. 14.

The defeat was Florida's first under head coach Jon Sumrall and undid the momentum of a 13-spot jump earned a week earlier by beating Ole Miss. Florida received 691 poll points this week, down from 1,272 seven days ago, and is now the eighth-highest-ranked team in the SEC.

Sumrall takes responsibility

Sumrall was blunt in his post-game assessment. "Hats off to Missouri. They played really good today. We did not, and that was an earned loss by us," he said. "Embarrassing performance in every phase. Starts with the coaching, starts with me."

He added: "I'm sick to my freaking stomach with what we just did, like, livid."

Missouri charges up the order

Missouri, as expected, made the opposite move, climbing from No. 25 to No. 14 after handing Florida its first loss of the season — moving ahead of the Gators in both the national rankings and the SEC pecking order.

The top of the poll

Texas held onto the No. 1 spot with 61 first-place votes, followed by Georgia, Notre Dame, Miami and Ohio State. Alabama moved up one place to No. 6 ahead of its home matchup with Georgia. LSU, Texas Tech and Utah round out the top 12 behind Ole Miss at No. 9.

Florida returns home next week against South Carolina with a chance to steady itself after the first defeat of the Sumrall era.
