Bangladesh closed day one of the one-off Test against Afghanistan on 317 for eight in Abu Dhabi on October 9, after a blistering opening stand gave way to a spirited late fightback from Afghanistan's pace attack. Tanzid Hasan's 83 off 71 balls and three fifties headlined the innings, but Afghanistan's seamers shared seven wickets to keep the contest in the balance.

Tanzid's opening charge

Tanzid Hasan was Bangladesh's enforcer in the first session, striking eight fours and four sixes in a 71-ball 83. He built a 124-run opening stand with the steadier Shadman Islam, repeatedly taking the fast bowlers over the off side and launching three sixes down the ground off the spinners. A century looked within reach until Ismat Alam had him caught behind, ending an innings that fell just short of Tamim Iqbal's Bangladesh record of 86 for the most runs in a Test's first session.

Shadman brought up his ninth Test fifty before falling to Mohammad Saleem's short ball for 67 off 111 deliveries, and added 60 with Mominul Haque for the second wicket.

Afghanistan's fightback

Bangladesh slipped from 221 for two to three wickets down for four runs in the second session. Yamin Ahmadzai removed Mominul for 39 and followed with a yorker that dismissed Mushfiqur Rahim for a duck, while Ismat Alam dismissed both set batters — Tanzid and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (24) — after forcing mistakes from each. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto, who had struck the ball cleanly, edged Qais Ahmed for 29.

A 62-run sixth-wicket stand between Litton Das and Mehidy steadied the innings. Litton's 53 off 89 balls marked a return to runs after ducks in his previous three Test innings in Australia. But Ahmadzai took a diving catch near the fine-leg boundary just before the new ball was due, and Saleem cleaned up Hasan Mahmud with a yorker in the same over.
