Title: Applied Materials and Kioxia to Co-Develop Next-Gen AI Memory at $5 Billion EPIC Center in Silicon Valley

Applied Materials and Japanese memory maker Kioxia will jointly develop next-generation memory technology at Applied's EPIC Center in Silicon Valley, the two companies announced on September 30, in the latest industry alliance aimed at feeding the AI boom's hunger for faster, denser memory.

Kioxia will join Applied's EPIC (Equipment and Process Innovation Commercialization) Center as an innovation partner. The companies plan to work together on advanced memory cell and structure formation, multi-chip stacking architecture, and new materials engineering to boost the memory density and performance that AI infrastructure demands. Their joint work will target high-performance, high-density memory architectures for AI; chip integration technologies that increase density within limited form factors; better integration density and interconnect performance for multi-die memory; and materials engineering innovations that enable high-volume manufacturing.

"High density, wide bandwidth, and energy efficiency"

"AI infrastructure needs memory with high density, wide bandwidth, and energy efficiency," said Gary Dickerson, chairman and CEO of Applied Materials. "We will combine Kioxia's memory technology with Applied's materials engineering." Kioxia president and CEO Ota Hiroo said, "The potential of memory depends on innovations in materials and processes," signalling his company's willingness to deepen the cooperation.

The $5 billion EPIC Center

The EPIC Center is valued at about $5 billion, the largest-ever investment in advanced semiconductor equipment research and development in the United States. It is slated to begin operations within the year and is designed to shorten the commercialization timeline from early research to high-volume production.

The partnership brings together the world's largest semiconductor equipment maker with one of the biggest NAND flash memory producers, and arrives as the AI era drives an industry-wide push into advanced memory architectures.
